I have read in a spacemarine battle novel that orks are "afraid" the dark due to bad nightvision and they wont even do assaults during night time. now on others this is not even a problem, now who do we say is right? its all published buy black library and so on. so what is like our codex for that? any thoughts?
I would not take the being scared of the dark thing seriously. Orks are barely scared of dying if at all. Not to mention Kommandos often fight in the dark. This is another case of an author trying to impose his own ridiculous views on the setting. I would suggest you just smile, and ignore it.
^^ That, and we don't have to remind you some ork tribes are dumber/more superstitious than others. Considering they think red makes you go faster, I could see some of them being afraid of fighting in the dark :p
But yeah, its probably an author trying to explain why it had to take place at night ;)
i aggre on choosing ""afraid"" was a poor choice, but in the novel its like the only advantage the imperials and space marines have. so this seems like a huge thing. since that changes Orks combat doctrine. and the Games workshop folks and black library printed this it must be kinda aggreed on that Orks alteast see bad. because the Orks completly stop their assault "and goes to bed" because they dont fight in the dark. either it must be a huge glitch from Black library, and/or Games workshop. or thats the way orks are. (even tho it may be that somewhat in the way kidsinister223 is saying that its just a dumb or superstitous clan of Orks, the problem i got is that i dont remember wich book it is so i cant rly just look it up)
I would believe that to be Rynn's World. I think it is so that they change tactics during night. They cannot see and thus they do not know where the enemy is. An ork is stupid and fearless, but they will not charge into nothing hoping to hit something.
yea it most likley was Rynn's World. but in that book it was a huge siege and then they dont need to see during the night time "eres a uge builin wit em imp symbols on it. les get stomping!" would be like my idea of Orks at that stage. i just find it so very strange that they would just pack up and be back in the morning. dont sound very Orkish to me. oh well i guess thats like my main point :P and i was wondering if we then use this in the wiki or if its up for a judge round or whatever. thanks for any reply tho nice talking to someone about Warhammer 40K lore and facts anyway :)
For that matter I don't buy for a second that Orks have bad eyesight. I think the author came up with that because Orks definitely have bad aim, which is not the same thing. If Orks as a race had bad eyesight then Nazdreg could not have the same level of marksmenship as an Astartes, and he does.
i aggre, the Orks eyes are very tiny and red cant be much to use ehm for other then to find yourself a squid to eat. Nazdreg is like 1 of the uber rare Orks so its kinda more likely that he is a mutant Ork(if there is such things that Orks can mutate to anything usefull other then bigger or strange versions of psykers oh and squids).
I find it hard to believe that a race that is considered natuarally psychotic by human standards and have been known to load themselves into guns and catapaults as acceptable attack methods would suddenly be afraid of the dark. One ork warband was recorded to have entered the eye of terror (a realm that defys the laws of reality/sanity) in order to find a better fight. I doubt they would find a little lack of light even slightly startling.
i havn't read rynn's world but from what's been said here it does sound more like artistic license badly used. i doubt orks would be bothered in the slightest of fighting in the dark, especially against an enemy that can light up the night with their weapons - "head towards the flashes boyz, der's good fightin' over there", seems more like the ork mindset to me.
the only instance of them being scared of the dark i can think of is if it were savage orks on a deathworld, and the nocturnal life made a considerable habit of eating orks. the orks could then maybe develop a fear of the dark because there's no fight for them at night, just " wot's dat noise?" *chomp chomp* "where did the rest of da ladz go?"
