A Segmentum Fortress is a massive orbital fleet base maintained by the Navis Imperialis that serves as the headquarters for the battlefleet of one of the five Segmentae Majoris of the Imperium. Each of the five segmentae, the Imperium's primary administrative divisions across the galaxy, maintains a Segmentum Fortress or fleet base.
A Segmentum Fortress is a massive orbital void station and starport that possesses multiple docks, orbital shipyards and voidship repair facilities. In reality, relatively few of the voidships that are part of a segmentum battlefleet ever travel to their theoretical base in the segmentum, as they remain separated into their various sector battlefleets. The primary function of a Segmentum Fortress is to serve as the primary point of naval administration for all of the Navis Imperialis assets in the segmentum.
A Segmentum Fortress, as technically an extension of the civil administration of the Imperium, is commanded by an official of the Adeptus Administratum with the rank of master. The segmentum battlefleets are commanded by a naval officer with the exalted rank of lord high admiral; these flag officers are sometimes granted a seat on the Senatorum Imperialis of the High Lords of Terra.
