A Praetor is a bygone rank for a senior Astartes officer of the Legiones Astartes. They were the mightiest warriors and battle-leaders of the ancient Space Marine Legions, second only to the god-like Primarchs in martial skills and generalship. These lords of the Imperium held the power of life and death over whole worlds, with the direct control of entire war fleets and armies in their hands. Each was a vastly experienced warrior and warlord, unique in character, who has written a legend in blood for themselves, and carried into battle the finest wargear and weapons known to humanity. In their ranks could be found Chapter Masters and Lord Commanders, First Captains, Khans and Tribunes as the traditions of their Legions dictated. They were the masters of war and hve commanded the hosts of the Great Crusade that have conquered worlds unnumbered.

History

During the Great Crusade, Space Marine Legions were vast engines of war whose super-human warriors numbered in the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of fighters. The full panoply of war of a Legion was a terrible thing to behold, and was capable of obliterating entire civilisations through a variety of deadly means ranging from sheer brute force and numbers, armoured assault waves, murderous siege-craft or overwhelming and relentless attacks from close orbit. The particular methods of such exterminations were overseen and by the high commanders of the Legions, select individuals that brought decades of experience and acquired tactical acumen to the ruin of Mankind's foes.

Notable Praetors

Legion Number Legion Title Name Loyalty Status
I Dark Angels Master of Caliban Luther Traitor Banished to Caliban following an attempted assassination attempt on the Dark Angels' Primarch Lion El'Jonson, Luther was charged with being the active Regent of Caliban and the selection and training of new recruits for the Dark Angels. Ironically, Luther would eventually betray the Lion after allowing himself to be seduced by the offers of Chaos, rallying a good portion of his fellow Dark Angels to his cause. Jonson confronted the Chaos-corrupted Luther, and in a great conflagration, Caliban was destroyed in the aftermath. Deep within the bowels of The Rock the remnant of the I Legions' homeworld, and now their mobile Fortress-Monastery, within cell, kept alive for ten thousand years inside a stasis field, languishes the broken man who was once Luther.
