Navy Intelligence is the branch of the Navis Imperialis that operates as that service's intelligence and strategic analysis agency, including the collection and analysis of signals, Human (or xenos) and image-derived intelligence. Its operatives sometimes act in ways intended to carry out their own agenda in pursuit of what they believe to be the greater good of the Imperium regardless of the wishes of their often self-interested or fractious superior officers.
For instance, during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, operatives of Navy Intelligence present in the fleets serving with that Imperial Crusade discerned a plot by Lord General Militant Hechtor Dravere to advance his career in the Crusade High Command in the hopes of eventually being appointed the crusade's new warmaster in a way that not only threatened the position of Warmaster Macaroth, but which aimed to use certain morally dubious methods to achieve this advancement. Navy Intelligence put an end to this plot by activating primary and secondary operatives embedded within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade forces, who then acted on their own initiative to prevent the plot from advancing by interfering with or outright eliminating Dravere's pawns.
