The Grey Slayers was a Loyalist Space Marines Chapter of unknown origin and Founding that became corrupted by Chaos. Inquisitor Thrax purged the Chapter of mutants and Daemons with the aid of the Grey Knights, and the Chapter Master took his own life in shame. Untainted officers were raised up to lead the Chapter.

The purge was apparently not quite thorough enough, as Inquisitor Thrax himself was corrupted by the Ruinous Powers and possessed by a Daemon in the wake of the mission to purge the Grey Slayers. The new Daemonhost then transformed into some sort of Daemonic Chaos beast that was slain by Thrax's accompanying Grey Knights.

In the wake of Thrax's death, forces drawn from the Red Hunters Chapter were dispatched to investigate and secure the Inquisitor's holdings. In a remote Inquisitorial watch station far to the galactic south, a Red Hunters kill-team discovered almost a score of Space Marine interrogation subjects locked in stasis cells, preserved from the passage of time.

Those missing Astartes' story, including that of Demetrian Titus of the Ultramarines, could have come to an end there, had the Inquisitor responsible for overseeing the seizure of Thrax's holdings and materials felt inclined to conceal the shame of her fellow Inquisitor. Instead, Titus, and several other warriors of various Chapters who had attracted Thrax's attention, were conveyed to the Deathwatch watch fortress of Watcher Keep to be evaluated for eventual return to service with their battle-brothers.
