Legio Ignatum

The Legio Ignatum ("Fire Wasps") is a Loyalist Titan Legion of the Collegia Titanica, one of the military arms of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

It is believed that this Legio was founded before the Age of the Imperium, during the Age of Strife. The home of the Legio Ignatum is none other than Mars in the Segmentum Solar, the centre of the Cult Mechanicus and seat of its ruling fabricator-general.

This honoured Titan Legion is one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the three originating Titan Legions of Mars.

During the Horus Heresy it broke free from the yoke of the traitorous Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal when they chose to fight for the Emperor. Known for their ironclad loyalty, the Legio Ignatum was often tasked with guarding places of extreme significance, the greatest of which was the Imperial Palace upon Terra itself.

Their motto is Inveniam viam aut faciam which translates from High Gothic as, "I will either find a way or I shall make one."

The Legio Ignatum boasts a proud lineage that few other Titan Legions can match, for they are one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the first three Titan Legions to be raised upon Mars, which also included the Legio Mortis and the Legio Tempestus.

Originating in the Age of Strife, they were, according to the legends of the Martian Lexmechanics, one of the three originating Titan Legions created by the besieged Cult Mechanicus during the bloody wars to take back the Red Planet from the degenerate hordes of Cy-carnivora and mutant scavers that had overwhelmed Mars after the fall.

It is by the fire of their weapons and the steel of their resolve that Mars was safeguarded through the long years of the Age of Strife for, by their ancient oath, while any warrior of Ignatum still stood no harm would come to those places left in their charge.

It is this stubborn defiance, the bitter intransigence in the face of impossible odds, that would be the cornerstone of the Legio Ignatum's fame, for never in the history of that Order had they chosen to retreat in the face of the enemy.

This ironclad loyalty was to be both a blessing and a terrible curse -- at once the pride of the Legio and also the reason for their exile and near-destruction at the dawn of the Horus Heresy.

Where the warriors of the Legio Mortis and Legio Tempestus knew no creed other than death and destruction, the Titans of Ignatum often came to the aid of those isolated forge cities all but overrun by the monsters that roamed Mars. Many of these lesser forges would pledge fealty to the Legio Ignatum's masters, seeking to gain in perpetuity the indefatigable protection of those warriors and their Titans.

Only in defence of their forge-fanes were the warriors of Ignatum truly roused to open anger, boiling forth to give battle with a ferocious zeal when those fastnesses were threatened. To those who dared to trespass upon the ground they had sworn to defend, they offered none of the courtesy for which they were otherwise known.

On many occasions, the princeps of the Legio Mortis would mistake the forbearance of Ignatum for weakness and seek to dominate them by force, only to be met with defiant fury, and many credit the principal reason why the otherwise rapacious warriors of Mortis did not fully conquer Mars to the steadfast valour of the Legio Ignatum.

From this came their cognomen, the "Fire Wasps" -- named for the ancient insect predator of Old Earth whose nests none would dare defile lest they woke the beasts slumbering within.

With the coming of the Emperor to the Red Planet and the signing of the Treaty of Mars, the Titan Legions that made up the Triad Ferrum Morgulus would be granted new roles in the unified Mechanicum.

Where the Legio Mortis were bound to be a tool of utter destruction brought down upon Mars' foes and the Legio Tempestus were crusaders carrying Mars' will to the stars, the Legio Ignatum became the protectors of the Mechanicum.

The Fire Wasps would stand sentinel over the domains of Mars, both the sacred fanes of the Red Planet and those key installations scattered across the Segmentum Solar and beyond.

For much of the Great Crusade, they would fight only in defence of those worlds reclaimed in the name of the Mechanicum, fending off xenos incursions and crushing rebellions among the thralls.

IgnatumTitans

Among the most famous of their battles was the defence of Ultrecht Magni, one of the first worlds invaded by the Orkoid warlord Urlakk Urg and the beginning of the campaign that would culminate in a historic battle on the world of Ullanor. There, on the very edges of the Segmentum Solar, a dozen Titans of the Legio Ignatum stood sentinel over the seed of a new Forge World sown at the edges of the Red Planet's domain.

Perhaps seeking to reap the wealth of technology within the enclave's walls, Urlakk Urg would unleash his hordes against them as part of a wave of conquest, the last desperate onslaught of the only remaining Orkoid empire of note within the borders of the early Imperium.

More than a hundred lumbering Orkoid scrap-constructs led the assault, backed by uncounted swarms of crude gun platforms, a force large enough that the defenders could never hope to withstand them unaided.

Indeed, the warriors of the Fire Wasps would not win glory in victory, but would instead be immortalised for their heroics in defeat. Over the course of four long solar days of fighting, the 12 princeps would sell their lives and their Titans dearly, stubbornly refusing to abandon the defence and evacuate their Titans while any of the ground crews remained at their stations.

The Warlord-class Titan Perditus Existimamur was the last to fall, its final battle captured on pict by the evacuating magi, its guns firing even as the shambling Orkoid monsters pulled it down. When the Legio Ignatum took the field at Ullanor, to see the final end of Urlakk Urg, it was to the fanfare of the war horns of those Titans gathered, a salute to the fallen and a call for vengeance.

Horus Heresy[]

This fame, the renown for a loyalty that even the most fearsome of odds could not shake, would seal the fate of the Legio Ignatum. On Mars, a new order was slowly and quietly taking power, the servants of Horus having fully suborned the leadership of the ancient Mechanicum and turned them to the service of the Warmaster.

The Legio Mortis and much of the Legio Tempestus had already sworn their loyalty to this new master, leaving only the incorruptible Fire Wasps to stand for the Loyalist cause, unaware of the treachery that surrounded them.

What would follow, the Schism of Mars and the destruction of Magma City, are well known to history. The Traitor Titans and their allies turned on the few Loyalists left on Mars, obliterating them from ambush and burning the cities they had protected for centuries, with those of Legio Ignatum fighting to the last in defence of the forge-fanes they were sworn to protect.

It is held by the Legio Ignatum as a mark of bitter honour that none of their brethren stationed on Mars would survive the treachery that began the Horus Heresy, each and every one dying in battle against those that had forsaken their oaths to the Omnissiah.

Those that survived in distant posts about the Segmentum Solar took heart from this sacrifice, for though the Imperium was now riven by civil war their oaths remained unbroken and their name unsullied.

Their course was clear in the face of such perfidy, for oathbreakers could not be allowed to remain unpunished, but with the fall of the grand master of the Legio Ignatum on Mars there remained no single leader to guide the Fire Wasps.

Each individual detachment chose for themselves to either hold to their stations or to seek out the Traitors in the name of vengeance. Despite the division within this once mighty Titan Legion, each warrior was determined to fulfil the oaths they had sworn.

The traitorous Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal had removed from Mars the one force he could not turn but had failed to strike a lethal blow. In doing so he had gained only a short respite, for now awakened to fury, the Fire Wasps turned their every thought to revenge, bent their every action to the defeat of those that had forsaken their honour.

For those they had once called brother, the warriors of the Legios Mortis and Tempestus, they reserved the deepest hatred, seeing in them a twisted reflection of themselves and taking every chance to meet them in battle to prove once again the strength of their loyalty, a loyalty that would be repeatedly tested until the bitter end of the Horus Heresy.

Later, the Legio fought during the darkest days of the Heresy, defending the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra against the insurmountable hordes of Daemons and Traitors that the Warmaster Horus had brought to bear.

Innumerable tales of personal heroism and individual sacrifice survive from that time and the Fire Wasps have more than their share. To this day the Legio Ignatum is the only Titan Legion granted the singular honour of guarding the Emperor's Throne Room at the entryway to the Sanctum Imperialis of the Imperial Palace, where the Master of Mankind is interred within upon the sacred Golden Throne.

After the siege of the Imperial Palace was broken, the Legio Ignatum went on to fight in most of the major campaigns of the Great Scouring, cleansing Imperial worlds of the Chaos taint of the Traitors.

The Legion fought in the mighty conflicts on Paramar V and in the Tallarn System as it strove to drive the Traitor Titan Legions back.

In these long and bloody campaigns the princeps of the Fire Wasps came to know and hate with an abiding passion the Legio Mortis, old rivals who had now turned to dark heresy and foul worship of the Chaos Gods.

It was the Legio Mortis who had breached the walls of the Imperial Palace, and it was the Deaths Heads Scout Titans who had terrorised and systematically destroyed the populations of a dozen hive cities on Paramar and Tallarn.

The flames of hatred still burn hot and bright in the hearts of the Legio Ignatum -- and one day a reckoning will be made against the remaining Titan Legions amongst the forces of Chaos.

Notable Campaigns[]

  • Sarosh (Unknown Date.M31) - Sarosh was a planet initially conquered and subdued by the Dark Angels Legion of the 4th Expeditionary Fleet during the Great Crusade. A demi-Legio of Titans from the Fire Wasps was sent to Sarosh to crush any last pockets of resistance, thereby ensuring compliance of the planet.
  • War Within the Webway (004-010.M31) - When Magnus the Red, primarch of the Thousand Sons, learned of Horus's fall to Chaos and attempted to warn the Emperor using psychic arts forbidden by the Edict of Nikaea, he inadvertently unmade his father's great work, destroying the psychic wards around the Imperial Palace and breaching the Imperial Webway gate by allowing a Warp rift to open up within the dungeons of the palace. Thousands of hideous Daemons poured into the Webway and immediately set about attacking the Imperial forces within. The workers of the Mechanicum were slaughtered in their thousands and the Custodian Guard were hard-pressed to hold back the tide of daemonic fury that had been unleashed upon them. As the Imperial forces within the Webway were being attacked, the Emperor mustered the remainder of His Legio Custodes Custodian bodyguard and the Null-Maiden warriors of the Silent Sisterhood. Slowly, but surely, the Imperial forces pushed the blockades forward as the pressure from the Daemons' attacks waned. As the war raged on, new troops appeared amongst the hordes of Daemons attacking the Imperial forces. The powers of Chaos sent foully corrupted Heretic Astartes, Chaos Titans and other war machines into the Webway to try and force a victory. God-engines from the Legio Ignatum and the Legio Gryphonicus battled alongside the Custodians and Silent Sisterhood against the forces of Chaos within the Webway, helping to hold the encroaching hordes of Daemons, Chaos Titans and other Heretic forces from reaching Terra. After five standard years of continuous fighting, the War Within the Webway soon took a turn for the worse, as Imperial forces suffered many casualties. Finally, the Emperor Himself intervened, and was able to turn back the tide of the Neverborn with his formidable psychic powers. The Emperor's actions gave the surviving Imperials enough time to evacuate the Webway, and as Chaos forces closed on the portal once more the Master of Mankind mounted the Golden Throne and sealed the gate.
    • Siege of Calastar (Unknown Date.M31) - In uttermost secret the Legio Ignatum deployed a maniple of Titans led by the mighty Warlord-class god-engine Scion of Vigilant Light to the Aeldari Webway. When Chaos Daemons and Traitor Legiones Astartes began to steadily push the Imperials back, the Legio Ignatum covered the retreat of the Imperial forces to the Impossible City, an abandoned Aeldari settlement named Calastar that was located within the Webway. Fighting alongside their allies in the Loyalist Mechanicum, the Sisters of Silence and the Legio Custodes, the Legio Ignatum failed to hold the tide of enemies at bay, sacrificing themselves to destroy the enemy Titans. Although the entry to the Webway was saved in extremis by the intervention of the Emperor Himself, all of the Legio Ignatum god-engines were destroyed during the Siege of Calastar, thus heralding the failure of the Imperial Webway Project.
  • Schism of Mars (005-006.M31) - When civil war erupted on Mars during the opening days of the Horus Heresy in the Athabasca Valles, the war machines of the Legio Ignatum and the Burning Stars fought in bloody close quarters through the teardrop landforms caused by catastrophic flooding in an earlier, ancient age of the Red Planet. Neither force could gain the advantage, nor could either claim victory, so after a night’s undignified scrapping, both withdrew to lick their wounds.

  • Binary Succession (006.M31) - Following the schism on Mars, the new Fabricator-General Zagreus Kane and the Loyalists within the Mechanicum found themselves dismissed time and again by the Council of Terra, leaving the political status of the tech-priests extremely ambiguous. The so-called "binary succession" was resolved when the Legio Ignatum Imperator Titan Magnificum Incendius marched on the Great Chamber of the Council of Terra, which ultimately resulted in the creation of the Adeptus Mechanicus as a Loyalist successor to the Mechanicum and the Adeptus Titanicus to serve as part of its military division.
  • Fate of Jerulas Station (008.M31)
  • Battle of Beta-Garmon, "The Titandeath" (006-013.M31) - The Legio Ignatum took part in the long and savage Beta-Garmon campaign, which included hundreds of war zones across dozens of worlds. During this conflict, the Legio Ignatum was supported by the Knights of House Hermetika. Even before the greater armies of the Warmaster Horus reached the star cluster, the battle lines had long since been drawn, and fighting had been going on for many Terran years. It was a cauldron of battle that would consume millions of lives before its end and see the demise of entire Titan Legions, earning this campaign the dire moniker of the "Titandeath". The Beta-Garmon Cluster, also known as the gateway to the throneworld of Terra, was the last hurdle that the Warmaster Horus' forces had to overcome before they reached the Imperium's capital world. Heavily fortified by the Loyalists, Beta-Garmon would become one of the greatest and bloodiest battles of the Horus Heresy, as well as one of the longest-lasting.

  • Cataclysm of Iron (010-015.M31) - In the region known as the Belt of Iron, the Horus Heresy brought many long-held grudges to the surface. Realising how crucial the Forge Worlds in the area were to both sides in the conflict, the Loyalists deployed several Titan Legions, including the Fire Wasps. In recognition of their status as one of the three original Martian Titan Legions, they were given command of every battlefield that they fought on. They were at the brutal forefront in much of the action on the Forge World of Urdesh. Once the Loyalists had carried out the Emperor's judgement against the Traitors on Urdesh, the Regent left Titans from the Legio Ignatum to stand guard over the planet.
    • Censure of Urdesh (012.M31) -
  • Second Battle of Paramar V (011.M31) - The strategic Mechanicum provender world of Paramar V fell to the Warmaster Horus' hosts led by the Alpha Legion and the Dark Mechanicum in one of the opening moves of the Horus Heresy. Several Terran years later, a mixed force of Loyalists consisting of the Legio Ignatum, Legio Atarus ("Firebrands"), Legio Solaria ("Imperial Hunters"), with ground assault units from the Blood Angels and White Scars Legions, clashed with the defending Traitors. The Traitor forces were comprised of god-engines drawn from the Legio Fureans ("Tiger Eyes") and Legio Mortis ("Death's Heads") Titan Legions that were rearming and resupplying in the system after several Terran years of intensive campaigning, as well as extensive elements of the Sons of Horus and Word Bearers Legions. The Loyalists conducted a series of diversionary attacks across the Paramar System in order to draw troops away from their true target, before conducting a full scale planetstrike against Paramar V's primary spaceport, the Paramar Nexus. They captured it intact and then pressed outwards to begin the destruction of the mass-provender silos containing wargear and vehicles that sprawled across the plateau beyond. It was soon revealed, however, that the Traitors had seen through the ploy and prepared a huge counterattack force. Though they inflicted heavy damage on the provender silos before the Traitor counterattack hit home, the vast majority of the Loyalist invasion forces was surrounded and destroyed without mercy. The Paramar System would remain in Traitor hands for the rest of the Horus Heresy.
  • Imperial Muster at Beta-Garmon (012-013.M31)
  • Siege of Terra (014.M31) - The Siege of Terra was the final battle of the Horus Heresy waged upon the surface of the Imperial Throneworld itself against the overwhelming forces of the Warmaster Horus. The Legio Ignatum were one of several Titan Legions that took part in the intense fighting that determined the fate of the Imperium of Man and all of Humanity.
  • Great Scouring (014-021.M31) - After the death of the Arch-traitor Horus, the Traitor Legions splintered and dispersed, fleeing from the wrath of the Loyalists. In the wake of the Horus Heresy, the Imperium was a dismal, shattered thing and the Emperor was left a broken husk, confined to the Golden Throne for eternity. Yet for all this, the Imperium retained might enough to exact a bloody revenge upon its foes. There would be no forgiveness for the crimes of the Traitor Legions. Thus, began the age of vegeance -- "the Scouring." The forces of the Imperium harangued the Traitors to the ends of the galaxy, intent on exacting their pound of flesh from those who had wronged them and Humanity.

  • Third War for Armageddon (998.M41) - Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka launched a second and even more massive Ork WAAAGH! to conquer the Imperial world of Armageddon in 998.M41, initiating the campaign known as the Third War for Armageddon. As the battles raged on the planet, Ghazghkull unleashed another of his carefully prepared surprises. Incredibly, dozens of Ork Roks (asteroid fortresses) began to descend from orbit. The Roks made landings in the verdant equatorial jungles of the world and across the continents of Armageddon Primus and Secundus. Many were lost to ground fire or accidents but each one that survived became a bastion for the Orks, a rallying point and a ready-made fortress. Besides their formidable armaments, the Roks contained giant teleport arrays. These were employed to teleport down Ork reinforcements, including Gargants and heavy artillery, in an endless stream. Commissar Yarrick personally led attacks by Regiments of Cadian Shock Troops supported by the Titans of the Legio Ignatum and Legio Metalica which destroyed several of these fortresses.
  • 13th Black Crusade (999.M41) - When Abaddon the Despoiler and his forces of Chaos assaulted the world of Cadia during the 13th Black Crusade in 999.M41, the Legio Ignatum was one of the Loyalist Titan Legions of the Collegia Titanica to help in the defence of that beleaguered Imperial Fortress World by providing the Titans of the entire Legion to help throw back the hordes of Chaotic fanatics.
    • Siege of Hydra Cordatus (999.M41) - During the 13th Black Crusade, an unnamed Iron Warriors Warsmith laid siege to the world of Hydra Cordatus in an attempt to steal samples of Imperial Fists gene-seed from the Adeptus Mechanicus fortress located on the planet. This Warsmith's warband of Iron Warriors was supported by a battlegroup of Chaos Titans from the Legio Mortis, including the infamous Imperator-class Titan Dies Irae. Three Loyalist Warlords, two Reavers and two Warhound-class Titans drawn from the Legio Ignatum were stationed on the planet to provide support for the Mechanicus garrison forces. The Imperial defenders fought back bravely and many of the Traitor Titans, including the Dies Irae, were destroyed with the support of the Legio Ignatum 's god-engines. Unfortunately, the Warsmith eventually conquered the world and captured the gene-seed, which would be used to create new generations of Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marines, a victory for which this Warsmith was raised by the Ruinous Powers to become a Daemon Prince.

Legion Combat Doctrine[]

Considering themselves the last remaining true Titans of Mars, the Fire Wasps held a deep loathing for those Titan Legions that renounced their oaths and sided with the Warmaster Horus during the Horus Heresy.

Possessed of an abiding hatred for the Traitor Titan Legions, the Fire Wasps were quick to adapt their tactics to exploit the Traitors' apparent lust for blood, formulating overlapping fields of fire to punish the overeager.

For the Fire Wasps' princeps, the only true defeat was to dishonour their oath and so they would never surrender, even if it led to their death. These princeps believed that their honour would be restored only when every traitorious member of the Collegia Titanica was dead, reserving a particular hatred for those of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus who had betrayed the Omnissiah.

They would watch a world they vowed to defend burn when ordered to retreat, and vowed they would never yield a battlefield without a fight again.

Notable Titans[]

  • Imperious Prima - A Warmonger-class Titan dating from before the foundation of the Imperium. The Imperious Prima was involved in the valiant defence of the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra.
  • Magnificum Incendius - The Magnificum Incendius was an Imperator-class Titan of the Legio Ignatum under the command of Princeps Bazzanius that served as part of Terra's defences during the Horus Heresy.
  • Vindicata Manibus - Records long hidden from the eyes of any save the most trusted of the Omnissiah’s servants indicate that, though the Warmaster-class Heavy Battle Titan was a novel design in the eyes of the Imperium, it held a lineage as ancient as the Warlord Battle Titan. Vindicta Manibus, pictured above following the conquest of Urdesh, bears honour markings dating back to the Mechanicum's wars against the Cy-Carnivora upon the Red Planet during the Age of Strife, millennia before the coming of the Emperor. The kill-markings borne upon Vindicta Manibus's honour banner however, depict solely those Battle Titans slain by the god-engine since its awakening in 011.M31, a testament to the destructive power wielded by each Warmaster Titan.
  • Imperator Bellum - A Warlord-class Titan that fought on Hydra Cordatus against elements of the Legio Mortis. The Imperator Bellum charged into melee with the Dies Irae and died fighting it, but managed to rip a hole in the armour covering its primary plasma reactor. The Imperator Bellum 's partner, the Clavis Regni, later managed to destroy the enemy Titan by crushing its reactor in its battle claw.
  • Ignis Indicatio - The patterns displayed upon the armour of the Warlord Battle Titan Ignis Indignatio, depicted above after the conquest of Urdesh, are characteristic of the finery the Legio Ignatum often decorated their god-engines with. The Fire Wasps held great pride in their status as a member of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus even when such a name lost a measure of respect following the treachery of both the Legio Mortis and much of the Legio Tempestus. Like many Fire Wasps god-engines, Ignis Indignatio held a long and illustrious record, with the honour banner depicted above being the 87th banner depicting their conquest. The other banners were painstakingly reconstructed from records after the originals were removed from stasis on Mars and destroyed by servants of Kelbor-Hal.
  • Clavis Regni - The Clavis Regni was the Warlord-class Titan that succeeded in finally destroying the infamous Imperator-class Titan Dies Irae at the Battle of Hydra Cordatus when it crushed the ancient Traitor Titan's primary plasma reactor with its Battle Claw by exploiting the hole opened earlier in the massive war engine's torso armour. This hole had been created by its partner the Imperator Bellum at the cost of that Titan's life.
  • Scion of the Vigilant Light - A Warlord-class Titan under command of Princeps Nishome Alvarek that was deployed to Terra during the Horus Heresy. The Scion of the Vigilant Light was the main Battle Titan deployed by the Legio Ignatium to protect the Imperial Webway Project. The Scion of Vigilant Light was the sole Warlord-class Titan deployed into the tunnels of the Imperial Webway, its immense size calling for it to be disassembled on Terra, transported into the Webway and reassembled there. As with all other Legio Ignatum forces deployed within the Imperial stretch of the Webway, the Scion of Vigilant Light was lost in a most tragic way, betrayed by one of its own kind, the demonically-possessed Reaver-class Titan Black Sky.
  • Black Sky - The Black Sky was an esteemed Reaver-class Titan of the Legio Ignatum. At the time of the Horus Heresy, the Titan was commanded by Enkir Morova and selected as part of the Legion's deployment to defend the Emperor's Great Work in the Imperial Webway Project. For five standard years, Black Sky and its fellow engines fought the Aeldari and other denizens of the Warp, before the ruptured Webway was swarmed by daemons. It was one of these entities, Drach'nyen, that would take possession of Morova and lead him to kill his own crew. Gaining control of Black Sky through Morova, the daemon caused a last act of ignominy, executing the crippled but victorious Scion of the Vigilant Light before abandoning the Reaver.
  • Ascraeus - The Ascraeus was a Warhound-class Scout Titan active during the time of the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy. It was part of the Legio Ignatium's deployment to the Emperor's Great Work and was destroyed in defence of the Imperial Webway Project.
  • Ikarial - The Ikarial was a Warhound-class Scout Titan that was a member of the Legio Ignatium's deployment to protect the Imperial Webway Project. Ikarial was slain covering the final retreat into the Imperial Dungeon beneath the Imperial Palace.
  • Ilmarius Novus - The Ilmarius Novus was a Warhound-class Scout Titan that was part of the Legio Ignatum’s deployment to the Imperial Webway, where it was destroyed.

Notable Personnel[]

  • Fierach - Fierach was the princeps of the Warlord-class Titan Imperator Bellum that sacrificed itself to destroy the Dies Irae and many of the Legio Mortis elements that assaulted Hydra Cordatus.
  • Daekian - Daekian was the princeps of the Warlord-class Titan Clavis Regni that finally destroyed the Dies Irae and many of the other Legio Mortis elements that assaulted Hydra Cordatus.
  • Nishome Alvarek - Nishome was the princeps of the Warlord-class Titan Scion of the Vigilant Light, one of the very few Titans of the Loyalist Martian Mechanicum deployed to aid the Imperial Webway Project during the dark years of the Horus Heresy. A woman of impeccable standing and stature, Nishome Alvarek was a competent princeps, ill at ease with the fact that the architecture of the Aeldari Webway hindered her from marching against the foes of the Emperor. Standing true to her oaths, Alvarek nevertheless refused to back down or to abandon her command, even when it became evident that the Imperials were losing the battle for control of the Imperial Webway, especially given the fact that the Scion of the Vigilant Light would have to be abandoned, its bulk meaning the Titan was too cumbersome to navigate the rapidly narrowing passsages linking the Webway to the Imperial Dungeon beneath the Imperial Palace. Nishome Alvarek sought to obtain one last great victory before dying, a victory she achieved before being betrayed by one of her own, the daemonically-possessed Reaver-class Titan Black Sky.
  • Enkir Morova - Enkir Morova was the princeps of the Reaver-class Titan Black Sky. A battle-hardened Princeps at the outset of the Horus Heresy, Enkir Morova succumbed to daemonic possession while fighting in the Aeldari Webway, defending the Emperor's Great Work. Wearing Morova's flesh, the powerful daemon Drach'nyen unleashed countless atrocities, forcing Morova to slay his own moderatii before turning Black Sky's guns on Morova's superior, Nishome Alvarek and the striken Scion of the Vigilant Light.

  • Gravitonic Sensor Array - As befitting their status as one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the Fire Wasps had access to technology less illustrious Titan Legions did not. These included sensors that enabled Fire Wasp Titans to effortlessly track their targets even when obscured.

As one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the Legio Ignatum was a Titan Legion of the first order, which marked it as a Primus (Maxis)-grade Legio. Within its ranks could be found Titans of every class and size, including Warmaster Heavy Battle Titans and several Apocalypse-class machines that rarely left the central forge-fanes of Mars.

In total, they numbered almost 200 god-engines, with the greater number stationed on Mars and the remainder spread across the Segmentum Solar. Most common amongst their ranks were Warlord-class god-engines -- and Legio Ignatum were noted for their comparative lack of smaller Scout Titans.

When committed to the attack they were preceded not by a wave of lighter machines as was the standard doctrine of most Titan Legions, but by a phalanx of the heaviest Battle Titans, relying on the strength of their guns to carry the day.

A long-standing belief among the warriors of the Legio Ignatum stated that the fate of a battle was foretold by the first shot fired. If that shot struck a telling blow it would bring them victory, while a miss signalled a hard trial to come, and as such only the finest of marksmen would be allowed to make such a strike in the opening moments of battle.

An oft re-told legend tells that in the opening moments of the Schism of Mars, the princeps of the Fire Wasps were so shocked that the first shot was fired by a neophyte princeps and hit an allied Titan in error -- an omen of the tragedy that would befall the Legio Ignatum on that day.
