ManticoraBestiaFidelitas

The Manticora Bestia Fidelitas, a sigil which represents the unity of the three Chapters of the Adeptus Vaelarii -- the Emperor's Spears, the Celestial Lions and the now-corrupted Star Scorpions -- who once protected all the worlds of Elara's Veil.

Elara's Veil is a massive, crimson-coloured nebula located somewhere in the Ultima Segmentum of the galaxy that is also an isolated sector of the Imperium. It is named after the legendary hero Elara, a significant figure in the mythology of the people of the Ocean World of Nemeton.

Worshipped by most of the peoples of Elara's Veil, Elara's actual historical origin remains unclear. It may be the name of the Imperial Commander or a saint of the Imperial Cult who first brought the region into Imperial Compliance during the Great Crusade of the late 30th Millennium. To the primitive peoples of the Veil, however, she is the Emperor's bride and her crimson funeral veil became the nebula that now bathes the stars red. The Emperor is said to weep over her loss, producing Nemeton's constant rains.

Comprised of twenty Human-settled worlds, Elara's Veil falls under the protection of the three Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes known as the Adeptus Vaelarii, the "Sentinels of the Veil," which once included the Emperor's Spears, the Celestial Lions and the Star Scorpions before the latter was destroyed and corrupted by Chaos.

During the formation of the Great Rift at the dawn of the Era Indomitus, Elara's Veil became a part of the Imperium Nihilus, cut off from the psychic light of the Astronomican, and was beset by the forces of the Chaos Cult called the Exilarchy which included some of the Heretic Astartes who had once been members of the Star Scorpions and had formed a new warband called The Pure to claim their former home sector for the Dark Gods they now served.

After nearly a standard century of fighting according to the local passage of time in Elara's Veil due to the temporal instability caused by the Great Rift, the situation had become desperate and the defenders had not had any contact with the greater Imperium in all that time. During the Indomitus Crusade, Lord Commander of the Imperium Roboute Guilliman sought to rectify this by dispatching Lieutenant Commander Amadeus Kaias Incarius of the Mentors Chapter across the Great Rift to the region to determine the state of the worlds in Elara's Veil.

Notable Worlds[]

  • Nemeton (Space Marine Chapter Homeworld/Ocean World/Feral World) - Nemeton is a world in the Ophion System or the Avalon System (accounts differ on the name) of the Annwyn Reaches sub-sector, covered in enormous oceans, with small forested and mountainous landmasses scattered in between. The Emperor's Spears Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes has claimed Nemetom as its Chapter planet. Rainfall is common, and a temperate to nearly tropical temperature is maintained across the planet's entire surface. Rain is viewed by the pre-industrial Human population as a manifestation of the Emperor's sorrow over his lost bride Elara, for whom the nebula surrounding the system is named. A well-defended world, a large orbital minefield protects approaches to the planet, while many of the rocks and fragments of ice that make up Nemeton's rings have been turned into weapons platforms capable of bombarding attackers with waves of deadly torpedoes. Further defences come from the tech-priests of Bellona, a Forge Moon in the same system. The Emperor's Spears have formed close links with the Adeptus Mechanicus sect on Bellona, and together the have long defended Elara's Veil.
  • Elysium IX (Space Marine Chapter Homeworld) (Destroyed) - Elysium IX was once the Chapter planet of the Celestial Lions Chapter and was among the Imperial worlds located in Elara's Veil. However, sometime after the Great Rift's creation, it became one of the many worlds that fell to the Chaos warband called the Exilarchy, after the Heretic Astartes known as The Pure, the surviving members of the Star Scorpions Chapter, invaded Elara's Veil after returning to realspace from being lost in the Warp. Before Elysium was invaded, the Celestial Lions' Chapter Master, Ekene Dubaku, put into motion a plan to evacuate its population before the forces of the Exilarchy arrived. Dubaku knew it would be impossible to save the planet's entire population, but he hoped that enough of his people would survive to help both his Chapter and the spirit of Elysium live on. The current fate of the world's surviving population is unknown, but Dubaku drafted a message asking the Emperor's Spears' Chapter Master, Arucatas, if they could be relocated to his homeworld, Nemeton.
