The Conversion Beamer is a heavy weapon that fires a burst of energy that turns the mass of the target into a release of more energy. As such it is equally effective against large targets as small ones. However, the beam has to be held very steady to achieve the effect so the weapon cannot be used on the move. The Conversion Beamers construction dates back to pre-heresy times, as such these are extremely rare artifacts usually only wielded by a chapter's Master of the Forge. The further away a target, the more effective the conversion beamer as it is given more time to escalate its power. While the Conversion Beamer was dropped from the Warhammer 40K games at the publishing of the 3rd edition of the rules, it has since returned in the 5th edition and the RPG's.
