Is this really what the Adeptus Mechanicus believs to be the Machine God
Never thought of that... good point!
The VD does have some strange influence over machines and technology. That influence is seen as some personality? display of the machine, that is interpreted by the Adeptus Mechanicus as the influence of some machine god|spirit. Whether the VD can actually control machines directly, such as titans, is uncertain. For all we know that influence might not be from the VD itself, but from the prison it is held in, which could generate some sort of field.
Another good point was that the C`tan have different personalities. While one might choose to flee, another might be enraged enought to stay and cause damage. It also unknown what the state of the VD would be, should it escape. What if it starts eating our sun? The C`tan were originally some gas|energy life forms. Should it return to that state, can anything harm it?
But then again, if it did go back to its original form, could it harm us? For it does say that the C'tan were unable to physically interact with the universe when they were just sentient energy (granted there was the star eating business, but they were not able to go around on a killing spree to sate their appetites).
If the VD goes back to its original form and starts munching on the sun, then it would become unstable. Solar storms, radiation, EMP and other bad stuff. When a C`tan began feasting on the sun of the Necrotyr it became so unstable and dangerous that they suffered greatly because of it. So yes, it could indirectly harm Solar.
Good point, but what would it gain out of it? (Apart from petty vengeance & a very bland source of nutrition)
Both vengeance and it could also get rid of one of the few beings in the universe capable to overpower and possibly destroy it. The ascencion|restoration of The Emperor would be bad news for a lot the Milky Ways races. Necrons, Chaos, Tyranids, Ork and C`tan included. Remember that during the Great Crusade, when The emperor and the Primarchs were directly in charge of the Imperiums military, humanity Owned everything in the Galaxy.
I'm not sure you can actually have "bad news," for chaos, granted you can begin to defeat them bould would they really care? If anything most of them would enjoy shifting of power and the chaos/calamity it would cause (to a degree) but anyways back on topic, if the Emperor knew somehow that Necrons could pop stars do you think he trapped VD in mars on purpose to prevent this from happening?
i don't know how old the necrons' celestial orrery (the star popper) is but i like the idea that emps knew of it and so incarcerated the void dragon within sol as a hostage against such an action.
anyone ever thought of the void dragon as the metaphoric serpent of the machine gods eden? though not the conceptual machine god in it's self-the fallen star god then becomes the greatest gift of the machine god to the cult of the machine.
the emporor to many although still debated is still regarded as the machine god incarnate,it was he who brought the void dragon to mars. those who worship the serpent mistake the greatest gift of the machine god to the priesthood as the machine god it's self.
also i saw some talk of mars being a possible tomb world havnt seen any official fluff that would make that true? i know the necrons have attempted to take the planet before but that is hardly saying the place is formaly a necron world.
well you could at least say that certain human technologies like the men of iron, look a hell of a lot like necrons ;) there is a longer article with proofs from several fluff sources on some other forum ;)
on the orrery, they don't just pop stars. Doing so throws the entire galaxy out of balance and would have unforseen consequences. The emprah didn't really have a choice when he imprisoned he wasn't gonna and couldn't just walk across space to put the void dragon somewhere else, the only choices he would have had would have been Terra, Luna or Mars.
I think the only reason the Necrons would want to free VD would be to break it apart to avoid being controlled again in accordance with the new Necron lore.
