History[]
The Tyrant Star is an incomprehensible transient stellar phenomenon that tormented the Calixis Sector for many standard years. A monstrous, star-like object surrounded by unnatural darkness, it is a threat of immense proportions that remains a mystery even to the Inquisition. Appearing seemingly at random across the Calixis Sector, it immediately plunges everything around it into deep gloom and despair, often eclipsing that system's natural star in the process.
With its sinister radiation and unpredictable movements, this gargantuan celestial body is a harbinger of doom wherever it appears. When manifesting, the Tyrant Star causes geological disasters, mass deaths, madness, Warp anomalies, and other cataclysmic events. Any system unfortunate enough to be caught in its embrace is destined to suffer greatly.
In light of such horrors, the malevolent shining of this ill omen has also attracted the attention of doomsayers, leading to the rise of numerous fanatical cults whose followers see the Tyrant Star as the herald of an unfolding catastrophe that will mark the Imperium's end. Despite the proliferation of such apocalyptic beliefs, the true nature of the Tyrant Star remains unknown. Not a single scholar in the Imperium has been able to give a satisfactory explanation for its existence; nevertheless, powerful forces, with vast resources at their disposal, are keeping watch.

Many solar decades ago, in an effort to combat this growing threat, the Tyrantine Cabal was created -- a shadowy and dangerous Inquisitorial conclave that unites its members under a single purpose: to fathom the mystery of the Tyrant Star. With their headquarters on Lachesis, one of the moons of Scintilla, the capital world of the sector, they monitor the Tyrant Star's activities and investigate its nature. The leader of the Tyrantine Cabal is believed to be Lord Inquisitor Anton Zerbe, who is rarely seen outside of the Bastion Serpentis and often holds meetings with other suspected members of the secretive group. It is said Zerbe once roamed the Imperium seeking out corruption and incompetence amongst the Adepta but he is now dedicated to his role in discovering the nature of the Tyrant Star.
Zerbe is never seen without his impassive golden mask and magnificent gilded armour, and he seems perfectly at home on the throne of the Bastion Serpentis's audience chamber. He is not an easily approachable man and always remains distant from those around him.
Zerbe is even-handed to a fault, refusing in all cases to support one Inquisitor over another, no matter how grave an accusation may have been brought. His principal motivation is preventing strife within the Tyrantine Cabal, so that the group can do its holy work. He believes that if any one Inquisitorial faction within the cabal was to prevail, the sector -- and likely the Imperium itself -- would be doomed.

If the Radical Inquisitorial faction known as the Recongregators got what they wanted, the Tyrantine Cabal would devolve into anarchy. If the equally extremist Xanthites prevailed, Chaos would corrupt the work of the Inquisition in the Calixis Sector. Even the Puritan Amalathians, if they succeeded in their aims, would drag the Tyrantine Cabal into a miserable, stagnant malaise.
Zerbe's objective is to prevent any one of these factions from overcoming the others in the Calixis Sector, so that the Hereticus Tenebrae prophecy might be averted. Nothing else matters. He will even go as far as to recruit new Acolytes of his own to foil one of his Inquisitor's plans.
In addition to his political skills, Zerbe is a powerful psyker, although this fact is not generally known within the Tyrantine Cabal. Zerbe keeps his psychic talents in reserve should he be forced to vanquish a particularly dangerous foe personally.
It is rumoured that the Tenebrae Collegium, the ultra-secret heart of the Tyrantine Cabal, was created by then-Inquisitor Zerbe after Lord Inquisitor Aegult Caidin, the leader of the Calixian Conclave, granted him leave to form a special division within the Calixian Conclave following new understandings of the revelations of the Propheticum Hereticus Tenebrae.
