Plataforma "Tarántula"
La Plataforma de Defensa Automática, comúnmente conocida como Tarántula, es un sistema imperial móvil automatizado de armamento. Útil en una amplia variedad de papeles, es muy utilizada por la Guardia Imperial, aunque también por otros muchos grupos, como el Adeptus Astartes o el Adeptus Arbites. El origen específico del apodo de este sistema es desconocido.
Todo el sistema puede desplazarse con facilidad por el campo de batalla. Su uso primario es la defensa de áreas estratégicas y bases de las fuerzas imperiales. Suele estar armada con Bólteres Pesados aparejados para defensa antiinfantería, o con Cañones Láser aparejados para defensa antivehículos. Los Marines Espaciales hacen uso de otra variante equipada con un único Cañón de Fusión, lo cual convierte el sistema en una elección aún más poderosa para la defensa antivehículos.
Como sistema de defensa para posiciones estáticas, la Tarántula no tiene precio sea cual sea la variante empleada para todas y cada una de las fuerzas imperiales, ya sea la Guardia Imperial, la Flota Imperial, los Marines Espaciales, la Inquisición e incluso las Fuerzas de Defensa Planetaria.
Diseño
Plataforma Tarántula
Las Tarántulas son controladas por un motor lógico sencillo, infundido por el Espíritu Máquina, que le permite operar sin un controlador. Sin embargo, debido a los límites de las capacidades de puntería del motor lógico, debe establecerse por adelantado cual va a ser su modo de funcionamiento antes de ser desplegada en batalla.
- En modo de defensa cercana la Tarántula disparará contra todo objetivo que entre en un sector delimitado de 90º, que cubre un área particular en el campo de batalla.
- El modo de vigilancia permite que la Tarántula lleve a cabo la defensa del área cercana a la Tarántula, que podrá atravesar para enfrentarse a corta distancia con los objetivos.
- Si se activa en modo interceptor, la Tarántula se enfrentará a las naves enemigas, como las Cápsulas de Desembarco, que intenten acercarse y aterrizar en el área vigilada.
Cada Tarántula incluye su propio Auspex de puntería, y su fuente de alimentación interna, aunque es posible enlazar múltiples plataformas de defensa automática a una única fuente de energía para uso continuo. Una vez desplegado, el sistema de armamento seguirá operando hasta que se quede sin munición ó resulte destruido. Además, al contrario que sus contrapartes humanas, estos vigilantes automáticos no se quedan dormidos ni sueñan despiertos durante su turno.
Existen muchos tipos de plataformas de defensa automática, aunque las dos más comunes están equipadas o bien con Bólteres Pesados para defensa antiinfantería, o bien con Cañones Láser para defensa antivehículos.
Uso Táctico
Los usos para las plataformas de defensa automática son muchos y variados, desde defensa de perímetro a ataques por sorpresa, pasando por establecer bloqueos de carreteras ó formar parte de una línea defensiva estática. Sin embargo, su falta de movilidad inherente restringe su uso en un campo de batalla muy fluido. Las Tarántulas pueden ser trasladadas en el dorso de un Chimera o una Valkiria, aparte del complemento normal de tripulación y pasajeros. Suelen ser desplegadas vía Paracaídas Gravitatorio y desplegado a partir de los contenedores en los que vienen. Los Regimientos de Desembarco, como las famosas Tropas de Desembarco Elysianas, suelen emplear plataformas de defensa automatizadas equipadas con paracaídas gravitatorios lanzados desde Valkirias para ayudarles a establecer un perímetro defensivo en torno a los objetivos capturados, en especial cuando las emplean como parte de una Fuerza de Defensa de Plataformas de Defensa 'Castellano'.
Las plataformas de defensa del Adeptus Arbites suelen emplearse para control de multitudes y supresión de motines aparte de para defender sus bases de distrito.

Variantes
Marines Espaciales
Muchos Capítulos tienen un suministros de plataformas de defensa automatizada Tarántula que les ayuda a aliviar algunos de los problemas operacioneles a los que se enfrentan. Aunque muchos aprecian un modo de combate más móvil y flexible, los Marines Espaciales aún encuentran usos variados para sus Tarántulas, que incluyen la defensa de puntos de aterrizaje y rutas de extracción al establecer una retaguardia remota que frene o disuada a los enemigos que les persigan. Los Exploradores de los Marines Espaciales también han empleado plataformas automáticas de defensa para crear emboscadas, infiltrandose en territorio enemigo para ensamblar una Tarántula camuflada, y volviendo de nuevo a la seguridad de sus líneas. Las Tarántulas también se despliegan desde el dorso de los transportes Land Raiders, Rhinos y Razorbacks, así como desde Cañoneras Thunderhawk mediante el uso de Paracaídas Gravitatorios. Los grupos de plataformas de defensa empleadas para defender un área concreta se suelen conocer como una Fuerza de Defensa Automatizada.
Dichas Tarántulas utilizan la misma tecnología empleada en las torretas automatizadas de los transportes Razorback. En la mayoría de las ocasiones se construyen a partir de las torretas de un Razorback destruido, que acaba convirtiéndose en una plataforma de defensa automatizada con la ayuda de un Tecnomarine leyendo el Rito de Recuperación adecuado.
Tarántula con Lanzamisiles Hyperios
Los Marines Espaciales también disponen de un modelo único de Tarántula dotada de un Lanzamisiles Hyperios. Dichas plataformas Hyperios se manejan utilizando una plataforma de control central, y se despliegan en grupos hasta cuatro Tarántulas. La plataforma de control, aunque no dispone de armas, está equipada con un motor lógico y equipos de rastreo que permiten detectar a las aeronaves que se aproximen. Una vez un enemigo está al alcance del sistema, envía la telemetría de disparo a la plataforma más cercana, que se activa, reatrea el objetivo y dispara contra él. Se suelen emplear baterías de dichos sistemas para proteger locacizaciones estratégicas importantes de los ataques aéreos; aunque no resultan tan eficaces como un verdadero Whirlwind Hyperios debido a las limitaciones de su motor lógico, son más que suficiente para establecer una defensa estática.
